Hold the Nivelle up to a window and the light comes through. This is the quality that made Dehua porcelain famous across Europe four centuries ago, and it remains the most demanding test of the material. The Nivelle Teacup is built from fine strands of porcelain clay, woven by hand into an openwork lattice so delicate that daylight passes through the wall of the cup.

Blanc de Chine, from the kilns of Dehua

Since the Ming dynasty, the kilns of Dehua in Fujian province have produced a white porcelain so pure and translucent that European traders named it blanc de chine, the white of China. The clay contains almost no iron, firing to a warm ivory-white rather than the cold blue-white of industrial porcelain, with a soft inner glow that mass production has never managed to replicate.

Woven, not moulded

Each strand of clay is rolled and laid by hand, one over the next, in a technique closer to basketry than to pottery. The lattice must be built while the clay is soft enough to bend but firm enough to hold, a window measured in minutes. A single cup takes a skilled artisan the better part of a day, and a meaningful proportion collapse in the kiln. The pieces that survive carry the marks of the hand that made them.

Made to be used

The woven lattice forms the outer wall. A smooth inner wall holds your tea or coffee, while the air gap between the two layers keeps the exterior comfortable to hold even when the contents are hot. The 180ml capacity suits a Western tea service or a long-steeped Chinese tea, and the piece arrives with its matching saucer.

For collectors and for gifting

At this level, porcelain stops being tableware and becomes something closer to a small sculpture that happens to hold tea. The Nivelle suits collectors of Chinese ceramics, a milestone gift such as a wedding, retirement or significant birthday, and anyone who has decided their morning ritual deserves an object worth looking at.
